Do you feel like your weight loss efforts have suddenly come to a halt? You’ve cut down on calories and do regular exercise yet you’re still not losing weight? You are now questioning your genetics and struggling to find the answers.Well, i know the reason for your halted weight loss effort. Your metabolism!

WHAT IS METABOLISM

It is nothing but your body’s ability to burn or utilise food for energy. In plain and simple language, when you feed your body with any food, it has two options.

  1. To burn (utilize) the food, in our daily chores, including walking, running, talking etc.
  2. To conserve (store) the food, just in case you run out of it.

To put things in perspective, think about the slimmest (hope its a word) person you know. And you would realise that he/she eats everything and gets away with it. And we wonder in disbelief that why doesn’t he not put on weight. The reason is simple, his/her body utilises the food more efficiently and stores lesser food. This people are born with a fast metabolism.

And then we meet people who hardly eat anything and are unfit and fat. Their bodies first reaction upon receiving food is to store and utilise it later. But that utilisation of food seldom happens. These people are born with a slow metabolism.

In my case, i belong to the latter category and my body stores more food which means my metabolism is super slow. but over the years i figured out the way to speed this baby. Here is how

MORNING-NOON

START WITH A MORNING COFFEE

Drink a cup of black coffee or green tea (if your taste buds do not respond well to coffee) to start your day with. This daily dose of caffeine will help boost your metabolism by five to eight percent. Caffeine has also been known to be a powerful tool to curb fat loss. Substitute your rich masala chai with this and you will feel the difference.

EAT WHOLE GRAIN BREAKFAST

Make the first meal of your day count! Choosing a whole grain breakfast like oats allows to include fibers and complex carbs in your diet that speed up your metabolism. Fuelling up your body within an hour of rising will rev up your metabolism and help you burn energy effectively all day long.

HIGH-PROTEIN LUNCH

Boost your metabolism at lunch-time with a high protein diet. Protein foods take more work to digest, metabolise, and use, which means you burn more calories processing them. But keep in mind to keep it light, probably in the form of  salad; not in the form of makhani murgh(butter chicken).

NON-EVENING

WATER DURING THE DAY

Keep yourself hydrated. Whether you are sitting at your desk at work or at home, grab every chance to drink water. Fill up a glass of water and drink it down. The more water you flush into your system, the cleaner and detoxified it is.

TAKE A WALK IN THE AFTERNOON/EVENING

Studies have shown that sitting for an hour or more reduces the fat-burning enzymes in your body by as much as ninety percent. Keep your metabolism revved up by making sure you get up from your desk chair and utilise those smoking breaks to talk a walk. You may or may not smoke but your goal is to walk. Same goes for after-work. Walk as much as you possibly can.

EVENING -NIGHT

A LIGHT WORKOUT SESSION

After you are done with your day’s work and you’re back home, get comfortable and do some stretching and cardio. Once you’re done with that take a nice cool bath and relax.

SPICE UP YOUR DINNER!

Spices have shown to have compound chemicals called capsaicin that boosts your metabolism and curbs craving. Include cayenne pepper, black pepper, jalepeno or bhut jolokia if you can handle the heat!

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

The last important step. It is recommended that you get at least seven to eight hours of sleep. Multiple studies have linked weight gain to a lack of quality sleep.

Accept your metabolism and work towards speeding up through diet and exercise.
